Patients in the Roanoke Valley and surrounding areas including Salem, Blacksburg, Lynchburg and West Virginia, come to the Center for Plastic Surgery at Ridgewood Hill to receive breast augmentation or other breast procedures when they want to reshape, resize, or reposition their breasts.
What is Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation, commonly called breast implants or enlargement, is a cosmetic procedure performed to create more shapely breasts that many women desire. Most often, breast augmentation is done using silicone or saline implants to reshape and enlarge the size of breasts.
Benefits of Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation offers many benefits to the patients who elect to undergo this surgery. The benefits of breast augmentation include:
- Improved physical appearance
- Balanced and improved body proportions
- Restored shape and size after major weight loss or pregnancy
Types of Breast Implants
There are two primary types of breast implants used for breast augmentation. Saline implants are silicone shells filled with sterile salt water, while silicone implants are the same shells filled with silicone gel. Deciding which ones to use is determined from an evaluation, discussion and recommendation by Dr. Wray.
How is Breast Augmentation Performed?
Performed on an outpatient basis, breast augmentation is a surgical procedure done to enlarge the size of breasts or give more fullness to the upper part of the breast without a significant enlargement. A small incision under the breast is used to create a pocket under the muscle or just under the breast tissue for an implant. After placing the implant, while still under general anesthesia, Dr. Wray places the patient in a sitting position to make sure the implants sit in the proper position to create the desired appearance, balance and shape. As soon as the implants are properly positioned, the incisions are sutured and covered with waterproof dressings, and the patient is placed in a supportive bra.
Preparing for Breast Augmentation
At the time of your first consult, Dr. Wray will review your history, health and desires and expectations. She will explain the procedure in detail, and discuss the options available to you. What size implant is right for you is determined by measurements and trying on sizers to see what you will look like in your clothes with an implant in place. At the pre-op appointment, Dr. Wray will review the planned procedure with you and be sure that the appropriate implants are chosen. In addition, the following is important in preparation for surgery:
- Stop smoking and using all nicotine products at least two weeks prior to surgery
- It is necessary to avoid any aspirin, ibuprofen products, vitamin E and herbal supplements at least two weeks prior to surgery
- Necessary preparations in your home to allow you to have sufficient recovery time, sometimes including child care
- Arrange for someone to accompany and drive you to your procedure, as well as stay with you that day and night.
Breast Augmentation Recovery
Restricted activity is required for the first weeks following the procedure. Most patients take about four to ten days before returning to work if it is not physically demanding. Otherwise, work and physical activities are restricted for three to four weeks. Expect the breasts or chest to feel very tight at first. There will be some bruising, swelling and soreness for several weeks following surgery.
Breast Augmentation Results
Breast augmentation results are immediately noticeable. However, as the swelling goes down, the intended results become more apparent. It is important to note that a patient’s result will depend on her initial breast shape and placement. Additionally, if there is any droop to the breasts pre-operatively, additional procedures may be required to get the desired appearance.
How Much Does Breast Augmentation Cost?
The cost of breast augmentation varies depending on the types of implants chosen and the actual procedure being done. As part of the initial consultation, Dr. Wray’s staff will discuss the cost involved with breast augmentation. We accept cash and check as well as VISA®, MasterCard® and Discover®. We also offer financing through CareCredit®. Please note that with any procedures and treatments, we require full payment in advance.
