Dr. Carol Wray performs breast reductions for patients in the Roanoke Valley and surrounding areas including Salem, Blacksburg, Lynchburg and West Virginia, who suffer from large, heavy breasts.
What is Breast Reduction Surgery (Reduction Mammoplasty)?
A breast reduction, also called a reduction mammoplasty, is a procedure where the breast is reduced in size, lifted, and reshaped. This can be cosmetic in nature if the breasts are not exceedingly large and/or there are not a lot of associated symptoms. Dr.Wray does not accept insurance and only performs cosmetic breast reductions, not those that are medically necessary.
Benefits of Breast Reduction
There are many benefits of breast reduction including the following:
- Breasts more proportionate with body frame
- Permanently reduced size of breasts
- Firmer feeling breasts
- Better fitting clothing
- Possible relief from back, neck or shoulder pain
How is a Breast Reduction Performed?
Excess tissue, fat and skin are removed from the breasts and the breasts are lifted and reshaped. This is usually an outpatient procedure.
Preparing for Breast Reduction
To prepare for breast reduction, patients discuss their complete medical history as well as their family’s history. Additionally, Dr. Wray goes over the procedure in detail and the goals for having a breast reduction. She may also recommend to:
- Get a medical evaluation and lab testing
- Adjust any medications you take
- Take certain medications related to the procedure
- Stop smoking and all nicotine products at least two weeks prior to surgery
- Stop taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs (ibuprofen and naproxen), and any herbal supplements you take two weeks prior to surgery as they can increase bleeding
- Arrange for someone to drive you to and from the procedure and stay with you the night following your procedure.
Breast Reduction Recovery
Breast reduction recovery usually requires one week away from work, depending on the type of work. You will be wrapped in a dressing for about five days, and then you will wear a bra during the day and night for the next 3 months. It is important to support the breasts at all times while the incisions are healing. Strenuous activities and vigorous exercise can be resumed in about four weeks.
Breast Reduction Results
The results from breast reduction are immediately visible even though there may be some swelling and bruising. It takes about a year for the scars to fade and they should not be tanned while they are pink.
How much does a Breast Reduction Cost?
The cost for a breast reduction varies depending on the extent of the procedure. During the initial consultation, Dr. Wray and her staff will discuss the cost of breast reduction as well as payment options. We accept major credit cards including VISA®, MasterCard®, Discover®, American Express® as well as cash or check. We also offer financing through CareCredit®
Is a Breast Reduction Right for Me?
The ideal breast reduction patient is someone who is at their ideal body weight and has breasts that are too large. If your breasts are excessively large and you have significant symptoms including upper back or neck pain, a reduction may be considered medically indicated. Since Dr.Wray does not accept insurance, you may want to get an opinion from a surgeon who accepts your insurance to see if you qualify for an insurance covered procedure.
